Recently I assisted on a race in Shanghai, my hotel was located close to the Nanxiang Ancient Town in the Jiading District. Walking those old streets at night was like being sent back in time. The old houses, the small bridges, and the water canals create an amazing combination. The Jiading Fahua Pagoda Tower, which you can see reflected in the water on the left side of the photo was constructed during the Song Dynasty between 1205 and 1207. It is a square brick and wood structure with seven stories.

This photo is from Peratallada, a medieval village in the Girona province, in Catalonia. It looks like little has changed in the urban morphology since medieval times; It is a pleasure to walk around the cobbled. As a curiosity, the name of the city is derived from “Pedra tallada”, meaning ‘carved stone.’ Almost all the buildings were built with stone carved from the fosse which still encircles parts of this small fortified town.
